How to Configure Outlook for Large Email Files

Scenarios

  I want to configure Outlook to handle large mails differently to all other mails to minimise time spent online

Background

Outlook allows you to specify certain rules for emails with large files attached. This includes configuration options for both sending and receiving large emails. When sending, you can opt to break up messages that are larger than a certain size. This can be useful if you need to send attachments that are larger than 25MB, since @home has this as a size limit for outgoing mail attachments. When receiving mail, and using a dial up connection, you may wish to instruct Outlook to not download any files greater than a certain size. This will help reduce the amount of time spent downloading your emails, allowing you to control when, and if, you want to download large mails directly from webmail.

Solution

Configure incoming mail

  1. Open Outlook or your email client.
  2. Go to Tools->Options.
  3. Click on Mail Delivery tab.
  4. In the Dial-up options find the option 'don't download messages larger than 100KB'. Put a check in the box next to this option.
  5. Change the 100KB to the size limit that you wish to impose.
  6. Select Apply and then OK.

Configure outgoing mail

  1. Start Outlook or your email client of choice.
  2. Go to Tools->Accounts and select the home.co.uk account. Click on Properties.
  3. Select the Advanced tab.
  4. In the Sending section put a tick in the box beside 'break apart messages larger than'.
  5. Adjust the size from the default of 60KB to the size limit that you would like to use.
  6. Select Apply and then OK.
