Problem: Configure My Laptop to Use on Holiday

I am going on holiday and want to configure Outlook on my laptop so that I can check emails while I am away.

Scenarios

I am currently using Outlook or another email client to manage my email
Outlook is configured on my primary computer, which is not my laptop
I have access to a laptop that I want to use for emailing while away
My current Outlook settings do not leave a copy of mail on the server and use POP3 protocol
I would also like to tell others that I am away

Recommended Solution

Switch to webmail temporarily

The easiest option to resolve this problem would be to temporarily stop using Outlook and switch to webmail. This solution would require you to configure Outlook to leave a copy of your mail on the server, and/or to stop Outlook from sending and receiving mail on your main computer. See Leave emails on server for details on how to make this change. To access the Internet from your laptop you will need to establish a dial up connection from your laptop, and possibly change SMTP settings in Outlook.

Set up Outlook on your laptop

If you do not want to use webmail, an alternative is to set up Outlook on your laptop. While this is slightly more complicated to set up, it is easier to manage emails and you will spend less time on a dial up connection in comparison to webmail. Instructions on how to do this can be found in How to set up Outlook. Once Outlook has been configured on your laptop then you will need to ensure that emails are left on the server; otherwise, your primary computer may download emails before you have the opportunity to do so using your laptop. So follow these steps to Leave emails on server. Lastly, you will need to set up a dial up connection to actually connect to the Internet to send and receive your emails. When using a different ISP it is often necessary to change the SMTP settings in Outlook. Details on how to change these settings are provided in the article change SMTP settings.

Set up IMAP

The Internet Messaging Access Protocol (IMAP) is an alternative to POP3 that is often used where multiple computers are used to access a single email account. Unlike POP3 access, IMAP does not require emails to be downloaded. This means that the email remains on the webserver, but can still be manipulated by the local computer. This is especially useful when travelling, since you may not want to transfer mails to a laptop that is only being used temporarily. See Set up IMAP.
